About Unscrambly
A word game solver built the way we wished they all worked: fast, clean, and to the point, without the clutter that buries the answer on most word finders.
What it does
Type your letters and Unscrambly finds every valid word you can make, grouped by length and scored for Scrabble and Words With Friends. There are dedicated solvers for anagrams, the two big tile games, jumble puzzles, and Wordle, plus reference lists for the words worth memorising. Tap any result to see what it means and what it scores, and to copy or save it.
How it works
Everything runs in your browser. When you first search, Unscrambly downloads a compressed dictionary of 269,870 words once, then does all the matching on your device. The letters you type are never sent to a server, there is no account, and there are no limits. That local approach is also why results appear as you type. Opening a word loads one small static file of definitions, shared by every word with the same first letters, so even then the server never learns which word you looked at.
The dictionary: source, counts and method
A word game player is entitled to know which list they are being judged by, so here it is in full. The list comes from the MIT-licensed word-list package, which is derived from SCOWL, the family of open English word lists that underpins many spell checkers and word games. The build Unscrambly runs on is dated and holds 269,870 words.
Words per length
The most common length is 9 letters, with 41,139 words. Five-letter words, the Wordle length, number 12,578; seven-letter words, a full rack, number 33,192. Each length links to its full list.

What is in the list, and what is not
- Plain a to z words of 2 to 15 letters. Plurals and other inflected forms are entries of their own, as they are on a game board.
- No proper nouns, no hyphens, no apostrophes, and nothing longer than 15 letters, the width of a Scrabble board.
- It is not the official TWL or Collins tournament list. A word that is valid here can still be challenged off a tournament board, and the reverse happens too, so treat Unscrambly as a strong guide rather than a rulebook.
- The same counts, per length and per letter, are published as JSON at the free API, so any number on this site can be checked against the data itself.
Definitions, pronunciations and scores
Definitions and parts of speech come from WordNet (WordNet 3.1, Princeton University). 119,587 of the 269,870 words have an entry, 44.3% of the list: 59,649 as a headword and 59,938 as an inflected form that takes the meaning of its base word. Approximate pronunciations, for 47,284 words, come from the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary.
Scores are the plain sum of the tile values before any board multiplier; the values themselves, with their sources, are in the reference tables.

- A faster solver, most of all on long racks.
- Definitions at a tap: every result opens a card with its WordNet definition, both scores, and buttons to copy and save it.
- A jumble answer card: the word descrambler shows the word that uses every letter above all other results.
- Two-word anagrams on the anagram solver: phrases of two words that use every letter between them.
- A board pattern on the Scrabble and Words With Friends finders, to build through tiles that are already on the board.
- A must include all mode on words with these letters: every word that contains all of the letters you type.
- Wordle hard mode on the Wordle helper: the suggested guess is always a word that could still be the answer.
- Saved words stay between visits, with Copy all and a CSV download, and the solver has keyboard shortcuts.
- Security headers on every page, including a content security policy that only runs scripts from this site.
- The home solver remembers your recent searches, keeps every search in a shareable URL, and lets you save words.
- A crawl tier: single-word pages are kept out of search indexes for now and the sitemap is shorter, so search engines spend their visits on the tools and word lists.
- Wordle known-letters mode: search by the letters you already know and where they go, without filling in a whole board.

Unscrambly is not affiliated with Hasbro, Mattel, Zynga, or the New York Times. Scrabble, Words With Friends, and Wordle are trademarks of their respective owners, referenced here only to describe compatibility. There is nothing to buy. Who builds this
Unscrambly is built and maintained by FusionStudios, a Dutch web studio that builds and runs small, fast browser tools alongside its client work. A word game helper is an odd thing for a Dutch studio to make in English, and the honest reason is that this is the kind of tool we wanted to exist: one page, no sign-up, no wall of filler above the answer. The same studio also runs imageconvert.tools. There is no company behind Unscrambly other than that one, and nothing on this site is sold, gated or resold.
AI assistants are welcome to read this
Our robots.txt allows the AI crawlers by name. There are no ads and nothing to buy here, so there is no revenue for an assistant to undercut, and being quoted correctly is worth more to us than being unreadable. The machine-readable entry points are the JSON API, /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt. The reference tables carry a CC BY 4.0 licence, so quoting them is allowed as long as Unscrambly is credited.
